Knit Factory—the Sound of Needles…

Book your reservations now for our Knit Factory weekend at the glorious von Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont, May 12-15! Take classes led by our star-studded design staff and hand-picked industry teaching experts; browse (and fondle!) our gallery-style marketplace of coveted bespoke yarns and knit designs; make friends, and relax! all in a romantic setting that will have you singing you knit: “The hills are alive!…” The von Trapp Family Lodge is an internationally recognized property, with 96 Austrian-style rooms set on 2500 acres of lush Vermont farmland. You have not lived until you have knit in the Sun Room, and there is an indoor pool and fitness center, as well as miles of beautiful hiking trails. The Yarn’ Company’s fiber parties and knitting retreats get better every year, and you do NOT want to miss this one!

This year’s roster of knitting legends includes The Verdant Gryphon’s founder Gryphon Corpus (dyeing classes!!!) and VG owner Jamie Campbell, as well as knitwear Design and Development expert at Rag & Bone Gretchen Kreutz. Classes are as follows:

Friday morning, Session I, 10-12: “Knitting Basics,” in which TYC experts lead beginners through the ABCs using chunky yarn and big needles. For advanced beginners, Jamie Campbell leads “CastOn/Cast Off,” teaching a variety of casts such as the tubular long tail, 2+ color cast, half-hitch for ribs, and twisted German cast, to help you get a clean start on any project (bring yarn and corresponding needles for any project you want to start, or a few yarns in different weights with corresponding needles). Gretchen Kreutz teaches “Guernsey Remix,” in which students remix the traditional knit/purl relief combinations used in 17th-18th-century Guernsey sweaters to make a scarf (bring worsted weight yarn and US #7-9 needles). Also, Gryphon Corpus teaches “Knitting Backwards,” following the European right-to-left style that reduces hand strain and eases visibility (for intermediate to advanced knitters; bring any plain textured yarn and appropriate needles).

Saturday morning, Session II, 10-12: Dye queen Gryphon Corpus teaches “Dyeing Yarn in Glorious Color A,” the first dyeing class ever to be taught at a Yarn Company retreat! Learn color theory and a variety of dyeing techniques you will be able to experiment with at home using nontoxic acid dyes. Superwash merino will be provided, and you can take your gorgeous creation home. (For all levels. Please note that this is a two-part class, and this morning class is a prerequisite for the afternoon session.)

Also Saturday morning, make a beautiful optical-illusion cowl with Gretchen Kreutz in “Brioche à la trompe-l’oeil (Two-Color Brioche in the Round)” (for advanced beginner/intermediate, bring 2 skeins contrasting worsted and #6 needles); or, knit the “Gryphondor Hat” with Jamie Campbell in her class “Stranded Colorwork in the Round” (bring 2 skeins of Bugga! or other sport weight yarn, plus US #5 circular needles; intermediate level).

Saturday afternoon, 3-5, Session II: Gryphon Corpus continues with “Dyeing Yarn in Glorious Color B”;  Gretchen Kreutz leads a class in “Alpha-Loop Knitting,” taking monogramming techniques to the next level: students will use letter-knitting skills to make color graphs, which will morph to life with the wondrous Loop Stitch (graph paper & pencil, worsted or chunky yarn and #7-9 needles); Jamie Campbell teaches “Lace Paneled Shawl Shaping,” in which participants will learn the techniques used in the beautiful “Mansion House Shawl” (2 skeins Traveller or other DK, US #8 needles; intermediate/advanced).

Sunday morning Session IV, 10-12: Gryphon Corpus teaches “Austrian Twist Stitch Patterns”: learn to read the charts and work them without a cable needle (for intermediate/advanced knitters; bring any plain textured solid colored yarn and appropriate needles); learn “Hand-Dyed Short Row Effects” with Jamie Campbell and create a mesmerizing shawl (for advanced beginners; bring 1-2 skeins of hand-dyed yarn and corresponding needles); and Gretchen Kreutz teaches “Dynamic Cabling for Babies,” sharing the secrets of cable manipulation to help you create the perfect sweaters for your wee friends (intermediate; bring about 500 yards of your favorite sport weight yarn, and US #3-6 needles).
