Spin, Spin, Sin!

Learn to create your own yarn with spinner extraordinaire Donna Panner, founder of Spin City New York! Donna is teaching a spinning course in 3 modules.

Module 1, “Spinning 1” is the prereq for these courses (fear not, another session will start soon!)

On January 8 and 15, we are holding Donna’s Module 2 : “Fiber Prep and Carding.” Improve your spinning skills and learn the techniques of carding and combing wool and blending fiber!

Then on January 22, Module 3 is “Spinning Silk”---oh, boy! Donna will teach how to create yarn from various forms of silk and will show how to prepare silk hankies/caps for spinning.

Wheel Anyone? On Tuesdays 6:30-8:30, in “Spinning Wheel II,” you will learn the mechanics of the wheel and then use it to create several beautiful yarns. “Spinning I basics” is a prerequisite for this as well. For all of these classes, materials are not included, but are available at The Yarn Company; and, space is limited, so register soon. And don’t forget, spinners are welcome to meet Spin City on the first Monday of every month at The Yarn Company!

Broadway Blues Jazz Club Jacket

Looking to be wowed at Vogue Knitting Live NY 2014? We asked Irina Poludnenko to bedazzle us, and boy, did she ever: Our Vogue Knitting Live Exclusive Centerpiece:  the swinging Broadway Blues Jazz Club Jacket fuses knitting and sewing with bulky Malabrigo Twist and one of our exclusive blankets in Broadway Blues! Malabrigo Twist is 100% baby merino wool, 150 yards per 100-gram skein. Gauge 4-5 stitches per inch on US #8-11 needles. Broadway Blues is one of Malabrigo’s gorgeous colorways exclusive to The Yarn Company. The perfect combo!

Our exclusive colorway from Malabrigo will brighten our booths (530-536): Broadway Blues. A deep, rich blue verging on purple, marvelous and plush, thrilling as a night at the theater . . . will be available in so many bases: Rasta, Rios, Silky Merino, Aquarella,  Merino Worsted, Twist, and Lace!

We will also have (exclusively) Malabrigo’s fantastic famous blankets! Malabrigo’s yarn wizard Antonio used to hand-felt blankets for his kids when they were small. Now he dyes and felts this incredible fabric for grownups—and it is available only at The Yarn Company! Is it art or is it love? In any case we are looking forward to cooler weather: Antonio’s blankets can also be used as fabric, or worn as a cape or a throw, and we now carry them in Broadway Blues, as well as assorted solids and semisolids

Based outside of Montevideo, Malabrigo features wool from sheep raised by award-winning breeders who allow them to roam free-range in the hills of northern Uruguay, under the tender care of shepherds. Antonio Gonzales-Arnao, brother-in-law to owners Marcos and Tobias Feder, is the color magician of Malabrigo.

Together they deliver dreamy, kettle-dyed fibers whose softness shames cashmere. Malabrigo fibers are mulesing-free, and the company employs environmentally safe practices for processing it, using as little water and as few chemicals as possible. Water and waste that cannot be re-used are transported to a detoxification plant to be cleaned and treated for re-use. Similarly, dye waste is sent to a detox center as well. Bravo!

A bit more about Malabrigo’s bases: (As hand-dyeing makes each hank unique, be sure to use two skeins at once to ensure balance and random color distribution in your work.)
